Schedule- Full time, Days:
3 weekdays, 8:00am - 4:00pm
2 weekdays, 10:00am - 7:00pm
(NO weekends)
What You Will DoCandidates have a strong interest in providing behavioral health care to children and teens diagnosed with chronic and/or acute medical conditions across various levels of medical care. The Pediatric Health Psychologist works as a member of an inter-professional health care team in a variety of settings. In our Pediatric Specialty Care Centers, the psychologist is embedded within outpatient pediatric endocrinology services and pediatric neurology clinics; although opportunities for work with other pediatric specialties such as cardiology and pulmonology are available.
In these settings, the psychologist works alongside medical providers, utilizing a warm hand-off approach. Functional assessment, motivational interviewing, self-management strategies, and single session therapy with youth and families are the primary components of this consultative work.
Additionally, within these specialty care service centers, the psychologist carries an outpatient caseload of youth with co-morbid psychological and chronic medical conditions, providing brief (4-12 sessions) interventions for psychological presentations associated with specific medical conditions. Frequent presenting concerns include coping with chronic illness, dyspnea, chronic headache, seizure disorders, obesity, diabetes, difficulties with sleep, and associated family discord.
For youth requiring more long-term outpatient behavioral healthcare, approximately 8 hours per week the psychologist contributes to the AMITA Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital Outpatient Group Practice. In this setting, the psychologist carries an outpatient caseload for youth requiring longer-term therapy that may not be suitable for the short-term interventions provided in the pediatric specialty care setting. Referrals typically emanate from the psychologist, other pediatric specialty care clinic providers, pediatric inpatient staff, and other health psychology providers on the team.
The Pediatric Health Psychologist also contributes as a member of the behavioral health consultation and liaison (C/L) service on the inpatient pediatric units. The psychologist attends multidisciplinary rounds on the pediatric general and pediatric intensive care units and frequently collaborates with other disciplines (e.g., medicine, nutrition, child life, nursing) to provide brief assessment and interventions in this role.
Supervision of psychology fellows, pre-doctoral interns and/or psychology externs is a component of the position.
The position is primarily clinical in nature, but also incorporates administrative opportunities that affect program operations and development. In addition to clinical and administrative responsibilities, the psychologist plays a
significant role in the training of our pediatric health psychology intern and post-doctoral fellow.
Our internship program has enjoyed continuous APA-Accreditation since 2005.
